ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ITS GROWTH DURING COVID-19



 ABSTRACT

Inventions take place daily. Human beings are blessed with the ability to think and act which is not possessed by other creatures. Humans, with this magnificient ability, creates everything which were once stated impossible. They even make the dead live through an artificial pacemaker. Such innovations astonish every fellow human being and set an example for future better creations. Intelligence is the ability which is analysed in both human and other creatures. Intelligence in humans is the ability to realise and retain information. 

Artificial intelligence is the intelligence observed in machines which is remarkably enforced in computer systems through programs and also differentiated hardware. Also known as machine intelligence, it stimulates human intelligence in machines, making those think and act like humans. It also performs the actions done by humans. It can exhibit human traits such as problem-solving, learning, analysing data, etc..

This paper deals with the origin and development, pros and cons of Artificial Intelligence. This also analyses how this concept has grown during this pandemic period and also the future possibilities this has.

This research is based on secondary method as this mostly depends upon the already driven sources. The final part includes my own views and suggestions in this regard.

INTRODUCTION

“Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master.”

Intelligence basically means thinking. Artificial intelligence means making machines to think. Technology has become an inevitable part of the growth and development of humans. Artificial intelligence is one kind of technology that is gaining strength and publicity. As technology is becoming a part of our daily lives, Artificial Intelligence has become a topic to be debated and discussed where experts consider it as a boon and for a few, it is a disaster. Artificial intelligence is a wider branch of computer science obsessed with making smart machines having ability to  perform tasks that originally require human intelligence. AI is an knowledge based science which has multiple approaches, but progression in deep learning and machine learning are creating a inflection in every sector of the technical industry. They are used in Gaming, Language processing, Speech recognition, Handwriting recognitions and mainly robots.

Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, Google’s voice search, Google Assistant, etc.. all these applications make use of the Artificial Intelligence. They have made life easier for us. Either it be a phone call or an alarm,   the Artificial Intelligence has paved the way for more timesaving lives. But we are still uncertain about the future of thid field as it is unpredictable.

ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT

The concept of Artificial intelligence started with the question “Can machines think?”. What happens when this happens? This curiosity of the human beings led to the innovation of this idea. This thought had been there in the minds of our ancient philosophers but it was in the year 1956, the term artificial intelligence was officialy coined in a place called Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, where a conference was held. Allen Newell and Herbert Simon exhibit Logic Theorist  was considered the first program which supports reasoning. This field was not so easy as expected and it had to go through several obstacles which include criticisms, lack of funds, etc…

A series of timeline can be drawn from the year of 1943 where it all started to till date showing the growth of this concept. The period of 1974–1980 became the winter for Artificial Intelligence. It later renewed in the 1980s when the British government started funding it again. It underwent another major winter from 1987 to 1993 when markets collapsed and government fundings were reduced. But the process continued even after all struggles, and in 1997, IBM's Deep Blue became the first computer system to defeat a chess champion as it defeated Russian Grandmaster Garry Kasparov. In 2011, the computer question-answering system Watson won the quiz show "Jeopardy!" by defeating reigning champions. In 2014, Google made the first self-driving car to undergo and pass a state driving test. In 2016, Google DeepMind's AlphaGo defeated world champion Go player Lee Sedol. The quality of the old Chinese game proposed a major barrier to clear in this field. New innovations are still taking place.

WHY TO USE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?

“To every disadvantage, there is a corresponding advantage.”

We all know that giving power to machines will sort out definite problems but will also bringforth some devastations at the same time. But there is no wrong in giving a try. Hence, there are several benefits which arise out of the artificial intelligence. They can be listed as below

l Artificial Intelligence does not bring forth much errors.

l They can be used in critical areas where humans cannot work.

l They work faster as it is useful in timesaving.

l They can work continuously.

l They can even do works repeatedly without getting bored.

l They can take faster decisions and help in day to day activities

l There is always a hope for new and better inventions.

HOW CAN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BE DANGEROUS?

“Anything in excess can be dangerous.”

As every bright side has a darker inner stuff, Artificial Intelligence also has some cons as they cannot be used all the time. A few of the ways in which it can be dangerous is listed below.

l This creation makes human absolutely lazy.

l This also involves a high cost of production.

l It paves the way for unemployment.

l There are no emotions and hence no friendly atmosphere will be created.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND COVID -19

Artificial Intelligence has been used to a greater extent during this pandemic situation. This critical situation has given many new oppurtunities to this field. Artificial Intelligence, in coaction with Chest X-rays, helps in identifying the abnormal accumulations therefore diagnosing the incomprehensibility in the lungs, which is a standard characteristic of the COVID-19 illness.

CONTACT-TRACING OF MOBILE APPLICATIONS:

In April, 2020, Apple and Google, joined hands together to create a contact-based application to look for COVID-19 patients. Western countries seem to widely use the app on Bluetooth. In India, the similar strategy has been adopted by processing the Aarogya Setu app. This app uses the mobile’s location data and Bluetooth  and helps the user find out any doubted Corona virus patients so that they can be aware of. More than 10 million people are found to use this application in almoost 12 languages. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore has developed a mobile application called “GoCoronaGo” which helps further. In June,2020, India said to the United Nations that the contact tracing apps and drones have assisted India to come through COVID cases.

MASK VIOLATORS IDENTIFICATION CAMERAS:

  Many states have implemented Artificial Intelligence to identify people who donot wear masks, which has become the essential daily need using Artificial Intelligence cameras. Due to a increase in the COVID cases in the state of Telangana, the police department installed a software means in the CCTV cameras to fond out the mask violators. After finding out, it sends the information to the police headquarters, which automatically conveys the notification to the patrol team. This is identical to the Artificial Intelligence model formulated by China for identifying mask violators. This kind of Artificial Intelligence technology is at first installed in Cyberabad, Hyderabad and Rachakonda. 

PROVIDING TREATMENT:

  While the coronavirus was developing, Artificial Intelligence has expedited automatic repurposing of drugs to cure COVID-19. Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) has created an Artificial Intelligence model that may repurpose medicines according to the highest success probability against the disease. This technique is also used by Tata Consultancy Services to break down the bigger molecule of drugs into extremely efficient molecules against the disease, thus saving time.  

Besides this, Artificial Intelligence proved efficient in furnishing Tele-medicines and Tele-consultation and also online consultation with experts treating a specific disease. In several states, like Chhattisgarh, Artificial Intelligence achieved success by virtual training of the medicines to bring the COVID-19 pandemic under control. In the state of Kerala, Robots are being used for delivering hand sanitizers and  public health information in the isolation wards and building entrances to battle COVID-19. The IIT and Stanford Alumni have improved a device called Robo Sapien which brings the spread of the virus under control through a special mechanism. Many start-ups are now using Artificial Intelligence to find out the  solutions to treat and fight against COVID-19. 

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS

Each and every new invention will have both the advantages and disadvantages. It is the duty of humans to take care and make use of the positive ends of the conception to create a better world. Artificial intelligence has immense potential advantages. Some people also admit that Artificial intelligence can destroy human society if it goes into the wrong hands as we have many interesting controversies. But still, none of the applications in Artificial Intelligence are made in a way that it can destroy or subjugate humanity.
